Suffolk amongst one of the first in the country to launch innovative new approach to increasing the uptake of solar panels.
From 16 June 2018, Suffolk residents will be able to register in Solar Together Suffolk, the solar photovoltaic (PV) group buying scheme. Suffolk County Council has partnered with iChoosr, the group buying specialist.
Solar Together Suffolk (www.solartogethersuffolk.co.uk) aims to boost solar power for homes by making it easier for residents to find a trustworthy installer and easier for installers to find willing customers. It follows successful smaller test schemes in Norfolk and London, and many other larger scale schemes in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The scheme is being launched in response to Suffolk’s aim to grow the renewable energy generated on roofs. It comes at a time when many residents are interested in exploring solar energy but would welcome a helping hand on their journey to making an informed decision.
As part of the aspiration to Create the Greenest County and respond to climate change, Suffolk County Council is working in partnership with Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Councils, Suffolk Coastal & Waveney District Councils, and the Councils of West Suffolk via the Suffolk Climate Change Partnership to deliver Solar Together Suffolk, helping the people of Suffolk realise the economic benefits of generating their own renewable energy.
After a turbulent few years in the solar market, the numbers are again beginning to add up for households interested in generating their own renewable energy. Despite the reduced Feed in Tariffs, rising retail electricity prices and lower prices for solar modules are making solar attractive again for the UK domestic market. The current return on investment period for domestic consumers is attractive and compelling at around the 10 year mark.
