November’s Member of the Month is Still Good Food, who have just been awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Still Good Food is an environmental charity working to reduce food waste, and to raise awareness of the impact of food waste on our climate. Still Good Food started in Bury St. Edmunds in 2017 under a different name, before becoming a registered charity with their current name in January 2021. They work with around 700 customers per month.

Their environmental work includes the Gleaning Project. This involves taking groups of volunteers onto farms to collect surplus produce that the farmers are unable to sell, usually due to cosmetic criteria demanded by supermarket buyers.

On being awarded Member of The Month, Sarah Bullen, Project Coordinator, said
“Still Good Food are very excited to be awarded Member of the Month and very much appreciate the recognition of what we are doing. Having been a part of the Greenest County Awards in the past, it has been great to meet other organisations who are working hard to do their bit to fight climate change.”

We asked Sarah on how Community Groups could run similar projects:

“Many villages organise things like community pantries, which are run in a similar way to Still Good Food, but primarily aimed at helping those who are struggling with the current cost of living crisis. Although our main aim is environmental, we are aware that many of our customers appreciate being able to access the low-cost food we provide for a minimal donation.”
